6 Top Tips for Photographing Kids

child photographyPhotographing kids can sometimes be a real challenge or an adventure depending on the photographer’s perspective. If you are new in this business, handling kids in a photo shoot would be a test of your own patience since it is difficult to give them instructions. Kids, generally, get easily bored and distracted so as photographer you really need to find ways to successfully capture them on camera.

Professional photographers who have an extensive experience in child photography find it easier to conquer the problem on kids’ inattentiveness. They have discovered effective ways on how to successfully photograph kids.

  1. ALWAYS REMEMBER THE MAGIC WORD: “PATIENCE”

Kids are kids, it is in their natural nature that they do things differently and despite of your countless instructions they would always do what they want to do. Instead of forcing a situation to the kids just to have a few good shots, what photographers should do is try to interact more with the kids. Be friendly to them, play around until you have gained their trust. Through this, you would be able to do things easily than before. You would be surprised at how easy it is to convince these kids once you get hold of their friendly side.

  1. BE READY TO TAKE A SHOT

A word that usually rings a bell when we talk about photography is the word “CHEESE”. For several generations now, the word cheese is tagged with photographers since this is the word they commonly say when they are about to take a picture of their subject.

In photographing kids, the word cheese and the like can give the kids a cue that they should smile for the camera. The best way for photographers to have those sweet natural smiles from kids is to wait and always be ready to take shots. As you and those kids are playing around and interacting, always be ready to look for those instant moment to capture their smile, naturally and creating those angle would surely add up to it.

  1. USE NATURAL LIGHT ON YOUR PHOTO SESSION

Well, when doing a photo shoot inside your studio, it would be great to always consider proper lighting. But then, when it comes to child photography, some kids dont like too much light and so what photographers should do is to schedule the shoot in the hours where natural light from the sun is just right. It can be in the morning between 6:00 am – 8:00 am or in the afternoon 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm. During these times, the sunlight is not too bright so a photographer can open the window and allow natural light to get in. This is usually called the Golden Hour of photography.

  1. BRING FOOD AND TOYS

One way to make kids obey you during a photo shoot is by getting their undivided attention through toys, props, candies or food. Kids would surely respond to your call better. Make sure though to ask the permission of the parents ahead so you will know if it is ok with them to have their kids eat some candies or food.

  1. LEARN YOUR CAMERA’S DIFFERENT SETTINGS

Surely there are instances that you would be forced to capture moving subjects most especially when we talked about kids photo shoot. Kids playing hide and seek, or running from one another, a situation that photographers should be ready to take some few shots. That is why it is very important that you as the photographer knows the different shooting modes in your camera. You need to familiarize the settings, controls and dials so you can adjust your camera based on what the situation calls for.

  1. GIVE SOME ADVICE TO PARENTS

As what we have mentioned before, kids are easily distracted and sometimes get irritated. One solution to this problem is to advice parents before the photo shoot to ensure that the kids are well rested and well fed. A tired and hungry kid will surely have no energy to participate during the shoot.
